Custom record player cabinet

Inspired by the very popular cabinet made by La Redoute, as well as an even more popular one from Ikea, I built a custom record player cabinet.

The open spaces are sized, of course, to store records, but also to fit the sadly discontinued Ikea Eneby 30 speaker, which sounds surprisingly well for its price and construction.

The glued dowels-based assembly makes it very sturdy, with no visible screws. The thin birch plywood panels, on which I glued some fake mahogany edge banding, give it a very pleasing appearance.

I did install a back panel on the cabinet, but made a large opening for the speaker space, to ensure that the bass frequencies’ energy can be dissipated properly. At first, the hole was not big enough, and some bass frequencies were amplified in a non-flattering manner, but increasing the size of the hole made the acoustics perfectly tuned.
